Medellin

Although a significant volume of Colombia's coffee production comes from the Coffee region, other parts of the country have also excelled at the production of this humble little bean. Never a region to be left behind, the rolling mountainous hills of Antioquia with its fertile soil and ideal climate also make the perfect location for the cultivation and production of coffee. The local haciendas take their coffee very seriously and have built their entire existence around the germination, classification, and preparation of Colombian coffee, generally regarded as some of the finest in the world. Understanding the trials and tribulations behind this energetic brew, like the coffee itself is a step closer to understanding the complexity and balance of flavours that is Colombia. There are various coffee-producing farms scattered all across the region, from larger estates to small family-run plots. Some using modern techniques, others still employing age-old methods handed down over generations. All will have verdant green rolling hills of plantations, and produce fine Colombian export coffee. Many have been producing coffee on their land for generations and proudly showcase the cultural heritage that underpins the production of this amazing drink that is so often taken for granted. There will be time to walk the plantations, understanding the full lifecycle of planting and seedlings through to cultivation and harvest. The rolling mountain terrain means there is a very intricate human element to the coffee process. Local workers toil the hillside, handpicking just the right rich red beans. The Beneficiadero is where the harvested beans are peeled, washed, dried, and packed ready for sale. Experiencing the stunning countryside scenery while learning about the complexities of Colombian coffee will help to explain why this delicious product that keeps the world energised is such a highly prized export. After this in-depth coffee baptism, it will be impossible to look at that simple morning brew in the same way!
