Trip Summary

Overview

Shaped around the natural character of Reykjavik and Keflavik, this journey offers an active yet polished approach to exploring the region. In Reykjavik, private arrangements introduce the journey with depth while leaving room to experience the destination naturally. For a more active perspective, a privately guided hike explores lava fields and soar above waterfalls on Iceland’s longest zipline in the Black Canyon. Time can be left to soak in natural hot springs and explore a glacier lagoon among icebergs by zodiac boat. As the journey moves toward Keflavik, the balance of cultural discovery and time at leisure can evolve with the destination. Privately guided exploration reveals ice caves, cascading waterfalls, and stroll the iconic black sand beaches. The journey may also draw on an additional privately arranged experience: Raft through glacial river waters and relax with an Icelandic sauna and BBQ feast. The final design of Active Iceland will be fully tailored, with every detail shaped around the traveler's priorities and expectations.

Reykjavik

Departing from central Reykjavik, join a small group of 16 or fewer participants for a journey inside the dormant Thrihnukagigur, one of few volcanoes on earth you can enter. With your expert guide, hike about 2 miles across rugged lava fields—the only way to reach the crater opening besides helicopter—before descending roughly 400 feet by open cable lift into the vast magma chamber. Spend around 30 minutes on the volcano floor exploring multicolored rock walls and hearing stories of Iceland’s volcanic forces, then warm up with traditional hearty soup and a hot drink before the hike back. Terrain is rocky and uneven; a walking pole is recommended if mobility is a concern.. Soar across Iceland’s glaciers, fjords, and volcanic landscapes on this self-guided immersive flight simulation, where full-motion seating and a sweeping 65-foot spherical screen create the sensation of true flight. Suspended with your feet dangling, you’ll glide over dramatic terrain as wind, mist, scents, and a cinematic score heighten the realism. The venue is easily reached on foot from central Reykjavik, and your Destination Expert can arrange pre-booked admission to ensure a seamless visit.
